let X be the maximum number of marks

secured = 178

failed by 22

4o/100x = 178+22

40/100x =200

200/40= 1/100x

1/5= 100x

X= 500

He get 178 marks and fails by 22 marks.

Therefore passing marks (40%) = 178+22
= 200

Total marks = (100/passing %) × passing mark
