A student is performing the experiment of resonance column. The diameter of the column tube is 4 cm. The frequency of the tuning fork is 512 Hz The air temperature is 38.^(@) C in which the speed of sound is 336 m//s. The zero of the meter scale coincides with the top end of the resonance column tube. When the first resonance occurs, the reading of the water level in the column is. (a) 14.0 cm (b) 15.2 cm ( c) 6.4 cm (d) 17.6 cm.

The reading of the water level in the column when the first resonance occurs is:

(b) 15.2 cm

The reading can be calculated as follows:

  • Wavelength ( λ )is equivalent to the speed ( v ) of a wave in a medium divided by its frequency ( f ). It can be represented as λ = v / f.
  • As per the question,

        v = 336 m / s  =  33600 cm / s

        f = 512 Hz

  • Thus, λ = 33600 / 512

                     = 65.6cm/s

  • Also, we know that , L + e = λ / 4

                                                 L = λ / 4 − e

                                                    = 16.4 − 1.2

                                                    = 15.2 cm
