A student measured the length of a square sheet using vernier calipers of least count 0.01 cm. The main scale reading is 8.9 cm and 7th Division of vernier coincides with one main scale division. If vernier calipers has a zero error of +0.02 cm, then the correct length of sheet is -?

Dear Student,

◆ Answer -

Correct length = 8.99 cm

● Explaination-

Consider,

MSD = main scale division

VSD = vernier scale division

# Given -

MSD reading = 8.9 cm

VSD reading = 7 divisions

LC = 0.01 cm

Zero error = +0.02 cm

# Solution -

Total reading on the vernier callipers is -

Total reading = MSD reading + VSD reading

Total reading = MSD reading + LC × VSD divisions

Total reading = 8.9 + 0.01 × 7

Total reading = 8.97 cm

Actual length of the sheet will be -

Correct length = total reading + zero error

Correct length = 8.97 + 0.02

Correct length = 8.99 cm

Hope this helps you...
