A student performs an experiment with 4 cells and a resistance wire and an ammeter

in series and observes that when the number of cells in the circuit is decreased, the

value of current through the wire also decreases. Name the law that is involved in the

experiment and write its mathematical form. 3 Marks

V-I graph for two resistors , and their series combination are shown in the

figure below. Which graph represents the series combination of the other two? Give

reason.

The law involved here is the Ohm's Law.

Ohm's Law states that the potential difference across the ends of a conductor is directly proportional to the electric current flowing through it.

So,
Mathematically,

V = I*R is the Ohm's law relationship
Where, V is the potential difference
I = Electric current
R = Resistance

Here, since we've been asked about the graph which represents series combination Ohm's Law, this means that the slope of the line that's largest will be the correct graph.

V = I*R
Comparing this with the equation of line passing through origin
y = mx

Here m is the slope.

Thus, resistance is actually the slope of the V - I relationship graph.

Because the resistors are connected in series, this means that the effective resistance is large.
Which means indeed that the slope of the graph must be big.

So, by comparing from the graphs given , line A has the highest slope and thus it is the correct relationship graph for a pair of resistors joined in series combination.

Hope this helps you !
