Solution:

Let the total money be x

A student spent his money on book = $\frac{x}{2}$

He spent on box = $\frac{x}{4}$

He spent on total = $\frac{x}{2}+\frac{x}{4}=\frac{2x+x}{4}=\frac{3x}{4}$

He left with money = $x-\frac{3x}{4}=\frac{4x-3x}{4}=\frac{x}{4}$

We are given that he still had rs 50

So,$\frac{x}{4}=50$

x=200

Hence He has Rs.200 in total .
