The size of the apricots will increase in water while it will decrease in sugar solution.

  • The reason behind the change in the size if apricots is osmosis through a semj permeable membrane in them.
  • The sugar solution is hypertonic and that's why it forces the water from the apricots to come out and reduces its size.
  • While in the case of plain water, the solution is hypotonic so water gets inside the apricots and increases their size.

Answer:

(i) In beaker A, the raisins would swell because water concentration is higher outside the

cell membrane. So more water enters the membrane than leaves it.

In beaker B, raisins will shrink because water concentration is less outside the cell membrane. So more water comes out of the membrane than enters.

(ii) A - hypotonic. B - hypertonic
