let the initial position of the submarine be -240 m

distance descended = 160 m

=> new position will be

-240m -160 m ....[since the submarine descended]

= -400m

Distance ascended = 390 m

=> final position

= -400m +390 m

= -10m

=> the new position of submarine is 10m below sea level
