The substances that undergo chemical change in thereaction (1.1), magnesium and oxygen, are the reactants. The new substance, magnesium oxide, formed during the reaction, is the product. A word-equation shows change of reactants to products through an arrow placed between them.

When a substance undergoes chemical reaction the product formed will be either combination of the reactants or decomposition of reactants.
for a simple example:
C+O2->CO it is combination of carbon and oxygen.
