In the poem ‘A Sketch’, by Christina George Rossetti criticizes one of her friends or acquaintances by calling him  ‘the blindest buzzard’, and ‘a mole’. Actually the poet uses these two metaphors for her friend to talk about his short-sightedness.

In the first stanza she talks about her friend, terming him as ‘buzzard’, and ‘mole’. He is perhaps a writer ─ as is clear from the expression ‘His quill is cut to a pen’.

In the second stanza she criticizes him for his inability to see clearly what is within their reach. She also feels his inability to read the part, and ignore the whole. He is so dimwitted that he can’t even see what is so plainly simple.

In the last stanza she wonders when he will begin to understand simple things. She makes it clear that he should not expect any help from her in that matter. She can only explain him the facts that are so visible already. Yet, he may not understand as he has put on blinders on his eyes. In spite of the explanation, he will not perceive the truth and turn away.
