A takes 9 strides = B takes 7 strides

Find the distance A traveled in 9 strides:

1 stride = 1 m

9 strides = 9 x 1 = 9 m

Find the distance B traveled in 7 strides:

1 stride = 1.2m

7 strides = 7 x 1.2 = 8.4 m

Define x:

Let the number of 9 strides needed be x

Find the number of 9 strides needed for A to be on par with B:

9x = 8.4x + 24

9x - 8.4x = 24

0.6x = 24

x = 40 times

Find the distance A would have traveled:

Total distance traveled = 9x = 9(40) = 360 m

⇒ A will be on par with B at 360 m

Answer: A should travel more than 360 m to overtake B
