Answer:

Time taken by larger tap to fill the tank = 3 hrs.

Time taken by smaller tap to fill the tank = 6 hrs.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the time taken by larger tap to fill the tank = T hrs.

Time taken by smaller tap to fill the tank = (T + 3) hrs

If both of them are opened simultaneously it takes 2 hrs.

So,

1 / T + 1/(T + 3) = 1/2

(2T + 3) / T(T+3) = 1/2

=> 4T + 6 = T² + 3T

=> T² - T - 6 = 0

=> (T - 3)(T + 2) = 0

=> T = 3hrs or - 2 hrs.

Since T = -2 hrs is not valid,

Time taken by larger tap to fill the tank = 3hrs.

Time taken by smaller tap to fill the tank = 3 + 3 = 6 hrs.
