If P takes x hours

Q takes x -2 hours

Rate of P = 1/x per hour

Rate of Q = 1/(x-2) per hour

Working together = 1/x + 1/(x-2) per hour

                               = (2x-1)/x(x-1)

Total time taken by the two taps = x(x-1)/(2x-1) = 1(7/8)

This simplifies to:

4x2 – 23x + 15 = 0

Solving this quadratic equation gives

x = ¾

OR

x = 5

We take x = 5

x – 2 = 3

P takes 5 hours

Q takes 3 hours
