Answer:

Whether or not a teacher is more important than a textbook depends on the student and the material. I am a teacher. As a student, I sometimes lived in a smallish city and had to take old-fashioned correspondence courses, where all I had was a textbook. I learned just fine that way. As a teacher, I can tell you that the majority of students do not learn well that way. They need instruction from a teacher. Some students need more instruction than others to grasp new materials and concepts, but most need at least some. In one class I teach, Accounting, there is one particular exercise students must do that I no longer even attempt to teach to the whole class at once. I teach the rest of the chapter, with opportunities for practice, and then start them on their assignment. But I tell them that when they get to exercise X they need to come see me and I will walk them through it individually, or maybe with one or two other students who are at the same point. The concepts involved just require that level of teacher-student interaction. So that is why textbooks can’t usually replace teachers
