  1. Let x be total strength
  2. If 1x/5 are girls then 4x/5 will be boys
  3. Given 5% boys failed hence (5/100)*(4x/5) i.e, x/25 boys failed and remaining boys (4x/25)-x/25 passed i.e, 19x/25 boys passed
  4. Also given 40% girls failed hence (40/100)*(x/5) i.e, 2x/25 girls failed and remaining girls (x/5)-(2x/5) passed i.e, 3x/25 girls passed
  5. Total students passed are (19x/25)+(3x+25)=22x/25
  6. % of students passed is (22/25)*100=88%
