we know that ...
(a+b)^2=a^2+b^2+2ab
a^2+b^2=(a+b)^2-2ab
here a=x and b =1/x
so.......

(x+1/x)^2-2.x.1/x
=(3)^2-2
=9-2
=7

Given,.
x + \frac{1}{x } = 3
making square of both sides be get ,

x² + 1/x² +2*x *1/x =3²

x² + 1/x² +2 = 9

x² + 1/x² = 7
