A thermodynamic system is taken from an original state to an intermediate state by the linear process shown in Fig. Calculate the (i) Net work done by the gas (ii) net change in internal energy and (iii) Amount of heat supplied to the system.

Concept :- workdone by a thermodynamics system = area under P-V curve and V - axis.

Work done is positive , if volume increases and negative , if volume decreases .

Solution :- work done in the process of DE = area inclosed by DEHGD

= area of ∆DEF + area of FRHG

= 1/2 × DF × EF + EF × FG

= 1/2 × ( 600-300)× (5 - 2) + 300 × (5 -2)

=( 450 + 900 ) Joule

= 1350 J

Workdone in process EF = - [ area inclosed by EFGH ]

= - 300 × ( 5 - 2)

= -900 J

Total workdone = workdone in process DE + workdone in process EF

= 1350 - 900

= 450 J
