A thread is not only weaker than a string but also much thinner in diameter. Though a string is thicker than a thread, it is however, not as thick as a rope. A rope is considerably thicker, stronger and heavier than a string. Its weight makes it impractical to use a rope for balloons or kites. A string therefore is most suitable for balloons.
