A total of 36,000 candidates appeared for the mathematics olympiad examination.
Of them, 40% were girls and the remaining boys. If 15% boys and 10% girls got
prizes, find the percentage of students who got prizes??

Number of girl candidates =\frac{40}{100} . 36000 =14,400

∴ Number of boy candidates =36,000 - 14,400 =21,600

Number of boy's got prizes =\frac{15}{100}  . 21600 =3,240

Number of girl's got prizes =\frac{10}{100}  . 14,400 =1,440

Total Number of students got prizes = 3,240 + 1,440 = 4,640

∴ The percentage of students got prizes =\frac{4,640}{36,000} . 100% =\frac{116}{9}% =12\frac{8}{9}%
