A toy car starts from rest and moves with a constant acceleration for 2 seconds, reaching a velocity of 6m/s.It then slows down with constant deceleration of 1m/s² for 6 seconds and then stops.

*Work out the total distance travelled by the toy car.

Answer:

Given :

  • u = 6m/s
  • v = 0m/s ( finally stops)
  • a = -1m/s ( negative as it is decelerating not accelerating)
  • t = 6sec
  • s = ?

By Second Equation of Motion,

  • s = ut + 1/2 at^2
  • s = 6 * 6 + 1/2 * -1 * 6^2
  • s = 36 + (-1/2) * 36
  • s = 36 + ( -18)
  • s = 36 - 18
  • s = 18 metres
