(a) Trace the development of an endosperm after fertilisation with reference to coconut. Mention the importance of endosperm development.
(b) Write the importance of ‘pollen bank’.
Answers
Answer:
a) Endosperm development: 1. The primary endosperm cell divides repeatedly to form a triploid endosperm tissue. 2. Endosperm cells are filled with reserve food materials which are used as the nutrition by the developing embryo. 3. During the endosperm development, the primary endosperm nucleus undergoes successive nuclear divisions to give rise to free nuclei. This stage is called free-nuclear endosperm. 4. Then the endosperm becomes cellular due to the cell wall formation. 5. For example, the tender coconut water is a free-nuclear endosperm which is made up of thousands of nuclei and the surrounding white kernel is the cellular endosperm.
b) The very important application of pollen bank is to preserve the biodiversity in the form of preservation of valuable of genetic resources. It is very essential to establish 'Pollen Banks' where pollen grains of a desired species would be preserved as genetic resource for breeding program.
