The answer is 6250 apples.

GIVEN

A trader bought some apples. 4% of them were spoiled in transport, 10% of the remaining got rotten and sold 90% of good ones. if 540 apples remained unsold

TO FIND

540 apples remained unsold, find the number of apples that he bought?

SOLUTION

The above problem can be simply solved as follows;

Let the number of apples = x

ATQ,

Number of spoiled apples = 4/100 × x = x/25

Remaining = x - x/25 = 24x/25

Number of rotten apples = 10% of (24x/25)

= 1/10 × 24x/25 = 24x/250

Remaining apples = 24x/25 - 24x/250 = 216x/250

Remaining percentage of apples after selling 90% = 100-90 = 10%

= 10/100 × 216x/250

Given,

Remaining apples = 540

Now,

10/100 × 216x/250 = 540

x = 6250

Hence, The answer is 6250 apples.
