Given:-

Length of tunnel= 500 m

Time = 1 min

Speed = 72 km/hr.

Find:-

Length of the train.

Solution:-

Let the -

  • length of the train be "x" m

Train travels 72 km/hr. in 1 min.

Now, let's convert the 72 km/hr into m/sec

To convert km/hr into m/s multiply with 5/18

=> \sf{\dfrac{72\:\times\:5}{18}}

=> \sf{\dfrac{360}{18}}

=> \sf{20} m/s

Also, Time = 1 min

=> 1 min = 60 sec

From above calculations we have both time and speed of the train.

Now,

\bold{Distance \:=\:\dfrac{Speed}{Time}}

Also, distance travelled by train when it pass through the tunnel = Length of tunnel + Length of train

=> 500 + x

Substitute the known values in above formula

=> \sf{20\:=\:\dfrac{500\:+\:x}{60}}

Cross multiply them

=> \sf{1200\:=\:500\:+\:x}

=> \sf{x\:=\:1200\:-\:500}

=> \sf{x\:=\:700}

•°• Length of the train is 700 m.
