A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 100m/min^2 for 10 min. it then maintains a constant velocity for 20 minutes. the brakes are applied and then the train is uniformly retarded. it comes to rest in 5 minutes.Draw a velocity time graph and use it to find
1. retardation in last 5 minutes
2. Total distance travel
3. average velocity of the train

Answer:

1. retardation in last 5 minutes= v-u/t

v=0

u=1000m/min

t=5 min

0-1000/5= -200m/min²

2.distance= area of this graph is a trapezium so

1/2*sum of parallel sides*height

1/2*(20+25)*1000

=26500metres

3.average velocity= total distance/total time

=26500/25=1060m/min
