A train travel with a uniform speed of 20 kmh-1 and cobered a distance of 40km form station A. If the total distance between station A and B is 160 km, how fast should the train travel for the remaining distance to reach station B, so that average speed for the entire journey is 40 km h-1 .

Answer:

For an average velocity 40 km/hr to cover the total distance of 160 km, the total time of travel should be,

Speed = Distance/Time

Time = 160/40 = 4hours

Time taken by the train to cover the first 40 km at the speed of 20 km/hr is,

Time = Distance /Speed = 40/20 =  2hours

- Now, the remaining distance of 120 km should be covered in 4-2= 2 hours, so that the total average velocity of the train is 40 km/h.

- Speed of the train while covering the remaining distance of 120 km in 2 hours is,

Speed = Distance/Time = 120/2 = 60km/hr

Therefore, the train should travel at a speed of 60 km/hr while covering the remaining distance, so that its average speed for the whole trip is 40 km/hr.
