A train traveled 400 miles in 9 hours. The speed of the train for the first part of the journey was 40 miles per hour while the speed for the second part of the journey was 50 miles per hour. Find the distance traveled when the train was traveling at 50 per hour.

Total distance =400 miles.

Total time taken=9 hours..

let the time taken to covered first part of journey be x hours.

speed=distance/time.

40=d/x

distance=40x.

Time taken for second part of journey be y hours.,

50=d/y

distance=50y.

50y+40x=400

4x+5y=40. -(1)

x+y=9 -(2).

x=9-y.

substitute the value of x in equation 1.

4(9-y)+5y=40

36+y=40

y=4 hours

So,distance covered for by train when speed is 50 miles per hour=50×4=200 MILES
