Answer:

Speed of the train is 40 km/hr

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the original speed be x km/hr

New speed be (x+8) km/hr

Distance = 480 km

According to the question,

480/x - 480/x+8 = 3

160/x - 160/x+8 = 1                                      Divide the equation by 3

1/x - 1/x+8 = 1/160                                        Taking 160 common

x+8-x/x²+8x = 1/160

8/x²+8x = 1/160

x² + 8x = 1280

x² + 8x - 1280=0

x² + 32x - 40x - 1280 = 0

x(x+32) -40(x+32) = 0

(x+32)(x-40)=0

x = 40 km/hr
