A tree 25m high broke at a point 8m above the ground but did not separate. Its top touched the ground. At what distance is the top of the tree from its bottom?

Answer -

Note : Refer to the attachment for figure

As per given in the Question ,

We have the following points ,

  • Length of tree was 25 m
  • If it broke at a point of 8 m then ,
  • the length of broken tree would be 17 m ( 25 - 8 = 17 m )

So by applying Pythagoras theorem we will get the length of base ,

(AC)² = (CB)² + (BA)²

(17)² = 8² + (BA)²

289 = 64 + (BA)²

289 - 64 = (BA)²

225 = (BA)²

BA = \sqrt{225}

BA = 15 m

Hence , the distance from the top of the tree from its bottom is 15 m

What is Pythagoras theorem ?

The Pythagoras theorem states that the square of Hypotenuse of a triangle will be equal to the sum of square of bothe the other sides .
