Let A'CB represents the tree before it broken at the point C and let the top A' touches the ground at A after it broke. Then ΔABC is a right angled triangle, right angled at B.

AB=12m and BC=5m

Using Pythagoras theorem, In ΔABC

(AC)

2

+(AB)

2

+(BC)

2

⇒(AC)

2

=(12)

2

+(5)

2

⇒(AC)

2

=144+25

⇒(AC)

2

=169

⇒AC=13m

Hence, the total height of the tree=AC+CB=13+5=18m.

Answer:

9m

Step-by-step explanation:

given : the part of tree which is still upright to the ground is = 4m

the top broken part = 'x' m

distance , from the base of the tree where the top part of the broken part of the tree touched the ground = 3m

So , the whole situation formed a right triangle.

with Base = 3m , and height = 4m.

therefore, 3²+4²=x² ( Pythagoras theorem)

=> x² = 25

=> x = 5m

therefore the hypotenuse/ the top broken part of the tree is 5m.

so, the total length of the tree was =>5+4=9m.
