A uniform conductor of resistance R is cut into 20 equal pieces. Half of them are joined in series and the remaining half of them are connected in parallel. If the two combinations are joined in series, the effective resistance of all the pieces is :
(A) R
(B) R/2
(C) 101R/200
(D) 201R/200

101R/200

Explanation:

Each piece has a resistance of R/20 Ohms.

The parallel combination of 10 of the wires will have a resistance of R/20 * 1/10 = R/200

The series combination of the other 10 wires will have resistance of R/20 *10 = R/2

So if the above 2 combinations are joined together in a series, then the effective resistance will be the sum of the two resistances.

R/200 + R/2  = (100R + 1R)/200 = 101R/200
