Given :-

Mass of a vehicle is 1000kg

Initial velocity of Vehicle is 25 m/s

Final velocity of Vehicle is 0 m/s

Time taken to stop the vehicle is 5s

To Find :-

Acceleration of the vehicle

Force applied by brakes

Solution :-

❍ To calculate the acceleration of the car we have to substitute the given values in the first equation of motion ::

v = u + at

Where,

  • v denotes final velocity
  • u denotes initial velocity
  • t denotes time

Finding the acceleration :-

⤳ 0 = 25 + 5 × a

⤳ 5 × a = 0 - 25

⤳ 5a = -25

⤳ a = -25/5

⤳ a = -5

[ Note : Acceleration is negative because speed of the vehicle is decreasing in order to stop it by applying brakes ]

  • Henceforth, the acceleration of the car is -5 m/s²

❍ To calculate the force applied by brakes we need to substitute the values in second law of newton ::

F = ma

Where,

  • F is force
  • m is mass
  • a is acceleration

Finding the force :-

⤳ F = 1000 × ( -5 )

⤳ F = 5000 N

[ Note : Value of force is not taken as -5000 N because force cannot be negative ]

  • Henceforth, the force applied by brakes is 5000 N
