A vertical off-shore structure is built to withstand a maximum stress of 109 Pa. Is the structure suitable for putting up on top of an oil well in the ocean? Take the depth of the ocean to be roughly 3 km, and ignore ocean currents.

Here,
depth of ocean ( h) =3 km=3000m
density of water(d) = 10³ Kg/m³
We know,
P = dhg
= 10³ × 3000 × 9.8
= 2.94 × 10^7 Pa

A/c to question , maximum stress which can be withstand by the vertical off-shore structure = 10^9Pa e.g greater than pressure exterted by water column.

So, the vertical structure is suitable for putting up on the tip of an oil well in the ocean.
