The shopkeeper faces the LOSS of Rs. 2000

Given :

  • A lady buys grocery worth Rs.350 from a shop. (shopkeeper selling the goods with zero profit)

  • The lady gives him 2000 rs note.

  • The shopkeeper gets the change from next shop, keeps 350 for himself and returns Rs.1650 to the odd lady.

  • Later the shopkeeper of the next shop comes with the Rs.2000 note saying "duplicate" and takes his money back.

To find :

The shopkeeper faces the LOSS of

A. 350

B. 1650

C. 2350

D. 3650

E. 4000

F. Other(Specify Amount)

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Calculate the loss that the shopkeeper faces

The lady buys grocery worth Rs.350 from a shop.

This amount of Rs. 350 is the first loss that the shopkeeper faces

Next the lady gives him 2000 rs note.

The shopkeeper gets the change from next shop, keeps 350 for himself and returns Rs.1650 to the odd lady

Rs. 2000 - Rs. 350 = Rs. 1650

The return of Rs. 1650 is the second loss that the shopkeeper faces

∴ The total loss that the shopkeeper faces

= Rs. 350 + Rs. 1650

= Rs. 2000

Step 2 of 2 :

Choose the correct option

The total loss that the shopkeeper faces Rs. 2000

Hence the correct option is F. Other (Amount 2000)

Shopkeeper faced a loss of Rs 2000.

Given:

A lady buys grocery worth Rs.350 from a shop

shopkeeper selling the goods with zero profit

The lady gives him 2000 rs note which is found to be duplicate later on

To Find:

Loss faced by shopkeeper

Solution:

Simple way to understand the problem.

All transactions done are valid except Duplicate note

If duplicate note is ignored then there is no loss or profit for shopkeeper.

But Shopkeeper received Rs 2000 Duplicate note worth Rs 0

Hence Shopkeeper faced a loss of Rs 2000.

Correct option is F )  Rs 2000

Detailed solution using Balance sheet for Shopkeeper

Transaction                  Credit         Debit           Balance

Initial                                                                        0

Given Goods worth 350      0           350              -350

Received Rs 2000 Note      2000       0               1650

Exchanged Rs 2000 Note   2000     2000           1650

Gave 1650 to Lady                0            1650            0

Returned Rs 2000 for duplicate  0     2000          -2000

So in End we get Balance as -2000 hence loss of Rs 2000.

Correct option is F )  Rs 2000
