A volume V of a gaseous hydrocarbon was exploded with an excess of oxygen. The observed contraction was 2.5 V and on
treatment with potash, there was a further contraction of 2 V. What is the molecular formula of the hydrocarbon?

Answer:

ANSWER

Initial volume of Hydrocarbon =V ml

CxHy+(x+4y)O2→xCO2+4yH2O

xV2yV

on treatment with potash CO2 will absorb

xV=2V

x=2

Contration of volume 2.5 V is due to formula of H2O contract is due to decomponiter CxHy for moles of H2O but in H2O then the Hydrogen

V+4Vr=2.5 V

4V+Vy=10 V

Vy=6∣V

y=6

∴ Formula =C2H6 option A
