Given :

Water droplet of mass M is in equilibrium in external Electric feild direction of whose is vertically upward

To Find :

Charge on water droplet & nature of charge

Solution :

•It is given that water droplet is in equilibrium with external Electric feild

=> Weight of water droplet of mass M is balanced by Electrostatic Force due to External Electric feild.

•Let Magnitude of Electric feild is E & charge on water droplet is q

•So, Electrostatic Force on water droplet is

F(Electrostatic) = Eq _____(1)

•Gravitational force or weight of water droplet

F( Gravitational) = Mg _____(2)

•Since , Water droplet is in equilibrium

F(Electrostatic) = F( Gravitational)

Eq = Mg

q = Mg/E

•Since , Direction of Gravitational force is downward so as to maintain equilibrium Direction of Electrostatic Force should be upward

Also, Direction of Electric feild is upward

=> Charge is positive

Hence , Magnitude of charge is Mg/E & it is positive in nature
