The distance travelled by the light in one year is know as a Light Year.

1 light year = 9.46 × 10^15 Km.

Calculating the value of 1 Light year:

From definition, it is clear that one light year is the distance traveled by light in one year.

Thus, to calculate the value of one light year in Kilometres we must know the magnitude of:

  1. Speed of Light (in Vacuum).
  2. Total number of seconds in one year.

Speed of Light = 3×10^5 Km/s

Seconds in one year = 365×24×60×60

= 31,536,000

Hence,

Distance travelled by light in one year is given by= (Speed of Light) × (Seconds in one year)

= 3×10^5 × 31,536,000

= 9.46 × 10^12 Km

Hence, One Light year = 9.46 × 10^12 Km.
