Explanation:

  • (a) A process of separation of a liquid mixture of chemical compounds into fractions at different boiling points is called fractional distillation. This is done by means of distillation, i.e. by using a fractional column.
  • The important function of fractioning column is to provide micro-distillation (condensation) surfaces so that the distillate fractionate pass through.
  • The distillate condenses upon rising on each of the fractional arms, thereby creating a temperature gradient between which each fraction distillate oscillates.
