(a) What is meant by 'diffusion'? Give one example of diffusion in gases.
(b) Why do gases diffuse very fast?
(c) Name two gases of air which dissolve in water by diffusion. What is the importance of this process in nature?
Answers
a)Random movement of gases, spreading of perfume in a room
b)Due to infinite degree of freedom
c)O2 and CO2
Explanation:
a)
Diffusion of a gases is defined by the randomness nature of gases.
Gases due to their less force of attraction have no shape and occupy the shape of the container.Diffusion is caused due to random collisions between them .So the particles will be having infinite ways to move around.
ex:- Opening a perfume which spreads smell all over the room
b)
Gases diffuse very fast because they have no force of attraction, they are also very lite particles with collisions in infinite directions .The kinetic energy acquired by them can be defined by the energy from randomness and from the energy of supply.
c)
Oxygen and carbon dioxide in water could be an excellent example.Fishes respire with dissolved oxygen and release dissolved carbon dioxide. All this is an important part of life as everything will be related through cycles. Fishes and underwater plants are heavily dependent on this.
Plants in Water do Respiration
Explanation:
a.) Diffusion is the property/phenomenon by which particles of different bodies mix and it is been said that this process takes place due to particle (Atoms & Molecules) of matter's continuous movement. So, its a natural process due to which different gases mix in air and that too continuously.
(b) Huge amount of Kinetic Energy is the property of the particles of any gas and these particles travel in all directions with good speed. This being the reason why gases might diffuse or mix at a high rate in comparison to liquids and solids.
(c) Due to diffusion the two gases (Carbon dioxide () & Oxygen ()) dissolve in water. Breathing is the process of aquatic animals getting dissolved oxygen in water () and similarly the aquatic plants also make food under water for food as the carbon dioxide is dissolved in water and we call this process, Respiration.
