a) 'Drone' is also used as a verb to describe a kind of voice. 'Drone' means dull and long, or unattractive and boring. Like our teachers 'drone' lectures. Another example is :' And he droned on about the working of an engine.' So here drone means the dull sound of the plane that was flying over them.

d) 'Beamed at him'- to beam means to smile at somebody and look at them with proud eyes.
e) it means that the Corporal turned his neck to look ever where the voice has come from. It is an expression to tell that somebody is looking for something.
g) it means that his eyebrows became tense as he felt humiliated. Tightening of brow means that he was angry. It is also an expression.
h) There was silence after Professor had said to the Corporal. He had corrected the Corporal and everybody was afraid as what might happen so everybody was silent. Dark flush means that the Corporal's face turned red due to anger. He gave the grenade to Professor. Professor took the grenade without feeling any shame or nervousness (that's what unabashed means here). As they were all sitting on the grass, a man who was going to sit beside Professor helped him stand up. Then he gave them a powerful lecture on grenades.
