1. Both were under colonial governments:

India was under the British rule for almost one-and-a-half centuries. India got its independence in 1947; while Brazil was under Portuguese rule. Brazil gained its independence in 1822. From 1930 to 1985, for more than a half century, Brazil was under a populist military government.

2. Both faced financial difficulties.

Management of resources and its proper utilization within the country were challenges for both countries. Now both are developing countries and major exporters to world (e.g. sugarcane, coffee)

3. Facing external wars and civil wars:

India faced three external wars (Indo-China War of 1962, Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Indo-Pakistan War of 1971) while Brazil's population fought against military coup which lead to civil unrest.
