(A) He expects that if the ghost is telling the truth about Claudius murdering his father, then Claudius will react to the scene, admitting his guilt. Hamlet states "The play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King.”

(B) Hamlet figures out that Claudius killed his father when the ghost of his father appears to him and tells him what happened. Apparently, Claudius snuck into the garden one day while Hamlet's father was sleeping there and killed him by pouring poison down his ear
