Answer:
.Dr.Barnard and his wife had suffered severe injuries in an accident.
.It was since then that he started thinking more seriously about SUFFERING; His father believed that suffering was God’s way of testing people and that it made one more noble. But Dr.Barnard did not find any sense in it.
.His father showed him a half-eaten biscuit and told him about his older son who had died due to a heart problem.
.He found the suffering of children heartbreaking because of their total trust in doctor and nurses.
.Dr.Barnard then describes an incident that he had witnessed in a children’s hospital. The two children took over a breakfast trolley that was left unattendant in a ward. They pushed it all over the ward while the remaining two one was blind and the other had only one arm. The blind boy steered it with the one arm he had. They enjoyed the game and were a cause for other’s enjoyment also. Dr. Barnard says that this incident made him realize that he was looking at ‘SUFFERING’ from the wrong end.
.Dr. Barnard then realized the true meaning of his father’s words. He understood that it is the experience of suffering which make one noble. One cannot enjoy life unless one experiences suffering. Therefore, Instead of crying over what we have lost, we must be happy with what we have left.
