A wire attached to vertical pole of height 18m is 24m long and has a stake attached to the other end . How far from the base of the pole should the stake be driven so that the wire will be taut ?​

Let

AB is a vertical pole of height AB = 18m

AC is a wire of length AC = 24 m

from the diagram

ABC is a right angled triangle at "B"

By Pythagoras theorem

AC² = AB² + BC²

AC² - AB² = BC²

( 24 )² - ( 18 )² = BC²

576 - 324 = BC²

252 = BC²

BC = 352

BC = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 7

BC = 2 × 3 7

BC = 67

The distance = 6.7m
