A wire attached to vertical pole of height 18m is 24m long and has a stake attached to the other end. How far from the base of the pole should the stake be driven so that the wire will be taut?

The stake should be driven   \sqrt{252}   m (This is 15.87450787 so you can round to whatever value you need to or keep it as a square root) away from the vertical pole.

This can be solved through the Pythagorean theorem.

First, we can change the equation to fit what we are doing. It would become \sqrt{c^2-b^2} = a

The height of the pole, 18 m is b, and the length of the wire, 24 m is c.

Now, we need to substitute in the variables into the equation which will give us \sqrt{24^2 -18^2} = a

This will simplify into \sqrt{576-324} = a

Again this simplifies even further into \sqrt{252} = a
