Answer:

The metals in the middle of the reactivity series occur in form of their carbonate ores or sulphide ores .

Firstly , the carbonate ores are converted into oxide ores by the process of calcination i.e. burning in the absence of oxygen .

let us take an example of zinc :

zinc carbonate ---------heated -----> zinc oxide + carbon monoxide

similarly the sulphide ores are converted into oxides by the process of roasting .

let us take an example of cinnabar ore of mercury :

mercury sulphide + oxygen ------heated------> mercury oxide + sulphur dioxide

then the oxides are converted into pure metals by the process of reduction .

For example ,

zinc oxide + carbon ------> zinc metal + carbon monoxide .
