(a) Write two points of difference in the structures of diamond and graphite.
(b) Explain why, graphite can be used as a lubricant but diamond cannot.
(c) Explain why, diamond can be used in rock drilling equipment but graphite cannot.
(d) State one use of diamond which depends on its ‘extraordinary brilliance’ and one use of graphite which depends on its being ‘black and quite soft’.

Answer:

(a)1.In Diamond each C atom is bonded to 4 other C atoms while in Graphite each C atom is bonded to 3 other C atoms. 2. The diamond is closely packed structure while graphite has  multi layered structure.

(b)Owing to the layer structure , Graphite acts as a lubricant since the layers are attached with each other by weak Van der Waal's force and tend to slide over one another but the diamond being too strongly packed to be used as lubricant.

(c) Diamond being the hardest elemental substance is used to drill rock but graphite is too soft to be a driller.

(d) Diamond-used in ring , Graphite - used in pencil
