Hi ,there !!!

a² + b² =13

ab= 6

a+ b =??

( a+ b )² = a² + b² + 2ab

=> ( a + b) ² = 13 + 2 × 6

a+ b = √ 25

=> a+ b = ± 5

hope it helps you!!!

thanks !!!

manamperi344: I know you've written it in the final answer, but it should also appear in the line before, in front of the sqrt{25}.
manamperi344: This is because sqrt{25} = 5 only.
manamperi344: but plus or minus sqrt{25} = plus or minus 5 :)
manamperi344: It does matter because saying sqrt{25} = -5 is incorrect; that sqrt symbol we all know and love is just the positive value of the square root (see my answer below).

5

(a + b)^{2} = a^{2} + b^{2} + 2ab = 13 + 2(6) = 25.

\implies a + b = \pm\sqrt{25} = \underline{\underline{\pm5}}.
