potential (V) at a given point. Potential difference is just that, the difference in the electrical potential between two points (e.g., V(b) - V(a) ). Both potential and potential difference can be negative or positive or zero.

As an analogy, think of a topographical map. Potential is like the lines of elevation (50m, 100m, etc. above sea level) E.g., point A is at 50 m above sea level, and B is at the 120 m above sea level. Then potential difference is like the difference in elevation (e.g., from point B to point A the difference is -70m, from A to B is +70m).
