Let 'y' be the age of the son.

We know that 'x' years back father was 'y' and x = y because it's been x years since the son was born.

Hence 38 - x = y

We know that x = y

So 38 = y + x will become 38 = y + y

Hence 38 = 2y ie 38 /2 = y

So y = 19

So son's age 5 years back was 19 - 5 = 14
