If Aria’s mother bought a cake for her birthday and she ate 1/3 of the cake with her sister eating 1/8, how much of the cake is left?

I think 2/3 of the cake was left. She ate 1/3 of the cake WITH her sister. And her sister presumably ate 1/8 of Aria’s 1/3. That’s my answer, 2/3 of the cake is left.

If the statement said, Aria ate 1/3 of the cake, and THEN her sister ate 1/8 of the remaining cake (1/3,) my answer would be different. The remaining cake would be 1/3 - 1/8 = 5/8.
