Abdul Gafoor was a rich merchant in Surat
EXPLANATION:
- In Mughal times numerous traders from different places such as Arabia, Indonesia, Iran, and from varied parts of India, such as Malabar (Kerala), Gujarat, Konkan(Maharashtra), Andhra, Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Agra, Delhi, and so on came to port towns like Surat. Such traders bought goods produced in various locations and exchanged them for merchandise from elsewhere and for silver and gold at Surat.
- Generally, these merchandise were bought at cheap prices from the people who made them. The products were then be sold to buyers from other countries at very high prices. The traders/merchants made enormous profits in this way. We come across many villages with fishing people on the way to Surat by entering the Tapti from the sea.
- Then came the village where the Mughal Amirs built a place to stop their ships. Here ships lie at the time of the monsoon and wait until the weather is clear before they continue their journeys through the seas. The wharf of Surat's wealthiest trader Mulla Abdul Gafoor was further up the river.
